About DDR2 (An old post)

THIS POST WAS SUPOSED TO BE PUBLISHED ON APRIL 5th 2005.
For some reason it wasn't so I'm posting it now...

DDR vs. DDR2 - What it means to you.

Manufacturer: Corsair

Supplied by: Corsair

by Brian Tiller (8/26/2004)

Introduction

Now that DDR2 is out, motherboard manufacturers have gotten geared up for it's appearance. Is now the time to go for the gusto and upgrade? Hopefully this article will help to shed some light on that question as we pit the new against the old.

Now, I'm not saying that the days of DDR are over, but we've pretty much seen the limits of what DDR is capable of. DDR2 is the next logical progression for memory standards and speeds. DDR2 incorporates several new designs and specifications which play a part in it's increased speed.

On-Die Termination
On-Die Termination is what it sounds like. With DDR, excess signal noise was eliminated by transistors built into the motherboard, but DDR2 has the terminating transistors built into each memory chip.

Posted CAS and Additive Latency
These two, prevent data collisions within the memory while still able to transfer more read/write instructions per clock cycle.

Off Chip Driver Calibration
Increases signal integrity

Prefetch
DDR uses a 2-bit prefetch while DDR2 now uses a 4-bit prefetch.

Package
No, not the cardboard and plastic that the memory comes shipped in, but the packaging of the memory chips themselves. Using a Fine Ball Grid Array (FBGA), DDR2 can be made smaller than DDR which uses Thin Small Outline Package (TSOP).

Below is a small chart, courtesy of Corsair, which outlines the major differences of the two types of memory.

DDR DDR2
Data Bus 64 bits 64bits
Data Rate 200/266/333/400 Mbps 400/533/667 Mbps
Bus Frequency 100/133/166/200 MHz 200/266/333 MHz
DRAM Frequency 100/133/166/200 MHz 100/133/166 MHz
Package Type TSOP-II FBGA
Densities 256MB 512MB 1GB 256MB 512MB 1GB
Voltage 2.5V 1.8V
Prefetch Size 2 bits 4 bits
Burst Length 2/4/8 4/8
CAS Latency 1.5, 2, 2.5 3+, 4, 5
Write Latency 1TRead Latency -1

From this chart you can tell that DDR2 effectively picks up where DDR1 leaves off. It's data rate begins at 400 and scales upward to 667 currently. Another thing to take notice of are the latencies; they are double those of DDR. Apparently, they are sacrificed for the higher speed, and it should be interesting to see what kind of a trade off it is. Voltage requirements for DDR2 are greatly reduced from that of DDR. Down to 1.8 volts; this translates into a lot less power needed to read and write for the memory.

Thanks to our friends at Corsair, we are going to pit some top rated DDR and DDR2 modules up against one another and let you decide how things fare in the upgrade decision. For DDR, we have our TwinX PC3200XL modules which will be going against the new DDR2 PC5400 units.

As you can tell from the labels, what DDR2 makes up for in speed, it loses in latency timings.

We first thought of a head to head comparison for these two standards when we saw that Gigabyte had come out with a motherboard supporting both DDR and DDR2 which would make the testing as fair as possible. Using the same motherboard and chipset would prevent any outside factors from influencing the test results.

Test Setup

  • Gigagbyte GA-8I915P-Duo motherboard 915 chipset

  • Intel LGA 775 2.8GHz Prescott CPU

  • Hitachi 80GB SATA HDD

  • Lite-On DVD-Rom

  • Albatron PCX5750

  • Windows XP SP1

Testing

  • SISoft Sandra 2004 Memory Bandwidth Benchmark

  • PC Magazine Business Winstone 2004

  • PC Magazine Content Creation 2004

  • style="font-size:85%;">Far Cry

  • Unreal Tournament 2004

We will start off with Sandra 2004's Memory Bandwidth benchmark.

Considering the differences in data rate, the results for the memory bandwidth benchmark are pretty much as expected. Now it's time to get into some productivity benchmarks with PC Magazine's Business Winstone 2004 and Content Creation 2004.

As you can see, there are some modest gains, but nothing to get excited about. The margin of difference between DDR2 and DDR here is very negligible, less than a full point in either benchmark.

One of the limitations of our motherboard is it's lack of DDR2 667 support. It will only support up to DDR2 533. We will of course be running the DDR memory at DDR400 while the PC5400 runs at DDR2 533. All other memory settings will be stock.

Overclocking

Since there is little change in performance running both the DDR and DDR2 modules at stock speeds, what kind of overclock are we going to get out of our DDR2? While we tried to overclock the DDR, we didn't get more than about 2 or 3 MHz out of it due to it's very tight timings. I would have loved to loosen the timings, but our Gigabyte motherboard (IMO - a piece of junk) had no options for the memory timings in the BIOS. However, we were able to push the DDR2 quite far and keep it stable.

We got the memory up to a whopping 607MHz which pushed our processor all the way up to 3.2GHz from it's base of 2.8GHz before the motherboard crapped out. Granted this is well below what the rated speed of the memory is, but I'm betting that once we get a better motherboard in with some serious overclocking headroom, we'll see the memory really shine.

Conclusions

When you get right down to it, for today's performance the differences between using DDR and DDR2 at 533MHz, there is little to no difference. Where DDR2 will shine, is in it's overclocking potential and the promise of future applications making use of it's enhanced speed and bandwidth. As when DDR was first introduced over SDRAM, it will be a while before these advantages are fully realized, but DDR2 will be sure to come into it's own sooner rather than later. Right now, there is no reason to upgrade your existing system based solely on DDR2. However, having said that, if you are already thinking it's time to upgrade, I would definitely recommend going with a DDR2 platform for future expandability not to mention it's overclocking potential.

We have every intention of revisiting this question in the future again once we get our hands on a better motherboard for further testing. Plus, I'm sure with a more stable board, we can reach some serious overclocks with this memory. So be sure to stay tuned in the near future for more information and articles following the progression of DDR2 and what it can mean for you.

For pete's sake, please get Firefox..

I've just been informed of an incredible bug in the Windows Fax/Picture Viewer. A simple img for example, when purposely corrupted, can lead to arbitrary code execution on the viewer's com.

What this means is that all you have to do is look at the file and boom I can run any commands i want to on your com.

So let me make it simple for you people out there. Firefox 1.0.7 IS NOT AFFECTED BY THIS. ALL VERSIONS OF INTERNET EXPLORER ARE.....

Please go and get firefox today because not only is it safer, it's simply better.

Actually, to be exact, there were TWO bugs found with regard to the Window Fax/Picture Viewer. But one of them really rocks...

This blog is safe from this because I am not so stupid to post a "virus" on my blog. Other sites like crack sites such as crackzc.ws however, have planted their website with this bug so when you think you're downloading a crack, you're actually gonna be getting a nasty surprise.

I've also successfully tested a cross site scripting vulnerability that works in a fully patched IE but NOT in FIREFOX.

Think the macdonalds website appearing in parts of your browser window when viewing Windows Update.

IBlogThere4IAm

Today's been a damn busy day..

Woke up at 8.30 this morning after sleeping at 3. (And yet I still look forward to the holidays)

My mom kindly donated to the "Let me take a cab there and back" fund. I was going to Pasir Ris *** to get some stuff for my aquarium.

I had to get a new 3ft Overhead filter, 20kgs of Gravel, some new fish, new aquariums' overhead lights, plants, etc... And oh yea, a fighting fish to fight with my bro's.

To me, this is what shopping is about. Shopping for aquarium stuff, fishing stuff, cars, gadgets, computers. Not for stuff like clothes that can cost more than what 100 plates of Char Siew Rice costs. (That's S$3.00 in case you didn't know).

Any girl who likes shopping is welcome to join me. :D

Anywayz, this place is next to my old fishing playground and being near that place again brought out the child in me. I'll be back.. :D

In terms of getting there, the taxi driver was a bit blur about the place and ended up ringing me up $4 more on transport charges. I spent about 2 hours in one "store" and as usual, was too lazy to check out the other stores. In total, I spent about $105 on everything and am now officially broke. Again.

I was incredibly fatigued from all the heavy lifting so the "store" lady asked one of her friends to tumpang me.

He dropped me off at the nearest bus stop and I waited for like half an hour for a taxi when this taxi driver suddenly starts beeping his horn at me from the nearby carpark? He asks if I want to be picked up so I say yes and he tells me to wait for him. So I wait for him and 2 empty taxis suddenly pass by and I'm thinking that these taxi drivers must travel in packs or something.

The thing is, when I get in, he realises that he's actually not supposed to pick me up. Don't get it? Apparently he was supposed ot pick up someone who made a cab booking and I wasn't he..

The fucking pissfart then called the other guy(the guy who made the booking - a Mr Wong), and confirmed if they had been picked up yet, and without so much as a I'll get you another cab, he was off...

Nin nao beh!!!

In fact the only things he said were "It's a misunderstanding" and "Sorry brother", once each.

So I waited for like another 15-30 minutes for another taxi which turned out to be a Comfort cab. Very friendly driver and very easy to talk to and stuff...

I gave my first official tip that(this) very day.. :D:D:D:D

And if you want to look at it from a very hormonal point of view, there was this very cute girl sitting at the bus stop behind me who happened to have been sitting there right from the point I reached the bus stop, to about five minutes before I got the Comfort cab.

And also if you want to look at it from the transporta... erm.. transportal??? point of view, it's even more fuel for the desire in me to have a car.

Anywayz, the inherent projects that I inherently inherited with all these new stuff for my tank include my new project to breed guppies, based on my past experience of breeding fighting fish.
sitenote: Ok. The above was probably the most fucking redundant statement I've ever made in my whole life.

The Last Samurai

I had the weirdest dream last nite but to protect my reputation I won't explain further. I just thought it to be my duty to inform my loyal blog reader(s) that I am human and not a bot who does not have dreams.

ok.. that was lame.. but I'm pretty busy now with things that would be incredibly boring to blog about...

Also, if you notice, the stuff on my sidemenu has changed. Links to my flickr account and new syndication feeds and such..

Anywayz....

I just rewatched The Last Samurai again.

It's a rather sad show... It's about the extinction of a very honourable subculture, i.e. the Samurai culture.

I dunnoe if the story has some truth in it, like whether a white dude really joined forces with the Samurai in a war that may or may not even have occured.

The point of this post anywayz is to point out something that I noticed the second time around. Besides the fact that the show was fucking brilliant in almost every imaginable way except that there were no chicks and that it brought a guy like me to the verge of tearing(not crying mind you), besides all that, the show has one underlying and subliminal message which may or may not have been put in by the author on purpose.

Imperialism.

When a White dude influences a Chinese dude, it can be considered as Imperialism.
When a White dude can do everything a Chinese dude can do and then some, it can be considered as Imperialism.

That's about all I can remember actually. I read about this from some article and it got me thinking.

It's one of those articles that when explained to you makes perfect sense but when you think about it on your own, it doesn't and more often that not, you forget how it all originally worked out. Much like the guy who explained why the new millenium shld be celebrated in the year 2001 instead of 2000... Don ask me how. Like I said earlier, I forget. lol

Regardless, for all intents and purposes, it's a good show to keep in your archives.

Boxing Day (Night)

As you can see, the new media player is up.

It took a bit of "hacking" for me to get it to work the way it does now including all those new features.

It took the me the better half of Boxing Day to complete.

Unfortunately, the player is in flash and so is not 110% customisable.

But don't worry. I'll be coding another one from scratch real soon. Assuming of course that none of my nitwit classmates ask me to meet for projects during my already packed "holidays".

Got that guys? I'm friggin busy liao..

It's Christmas Day(daytime).

This year's Christmas has been especially odd for me.

It marks my first year celebrating Christmas in Adultdom but I've got nothing to show for it.

Some of my cousin's started buying gifts for some relatives. I didn't though. Made me feel damn paiseh man. Next year I'd be sure to do the same. And I'll skip the gathering too so I don't have to stay and feel funny.

I'd do good to start skimping and saving up.
Next year's budget: $700...

In terms of presents, it was also a unique year.
Parents:
$50
Auntie Melon & Family:
T-Shirt
Godma & Family
Money hidden in an AngPao hidden in a Mont Blanc pen box. basket.. lol..
Godpa & Family
Shirt

Auntie Margie & Family
Crumpler Phone Pouch(Photo included)
Auntie Jan & Family
Windmill thingy(Photo included)
Grandpa & Grandma
BOXERS!!! (photo NOT included)

And to think that my family almost passed this up to drive up to Malaysia... lol

The Crumpler Phone Pouch

If you care to notice you'll see that the blades were spinning even while the candles were put out. I'm gonna attribute it to either my very hot computer or evaporating water from the fish tank.

A guy I know k.a. JXWee built a computer as a Christmas gift for his Dad... Pretty darn good if you ask me....

He plans to put WinXP and a hacked version of the MacOSX for Intel as the base operating systems. He may also put in Fedora Core and will probably fill it up with Open Source software like OpenOffice. Triple booting for an old timer.. lol..

Computer specs are:
P4 3.6ghz
1 gb pc2100 DDR SDRam
Intel 865pe Chipset
128mb geforce 5800

Interesting points to note:
May use external Boot Manager
It's currently one of the fastest computer configuration for consumers, or shld i say Prosumers.

Merry Christmas

I recently heard that EA Games was hiring people to be games testers. So i sent off an email to them asking for more details. It's been about 3 weeks now and have yet to get a reply. My source for this job lobang also sent them an email and hasn't gotten a reply either.

I had this funny feeling that our emails were too formal so today, on Christmas Eve, I have sent off another email to them. Here it is.

Dear Sir/Madam,
I have found out through a friend that you are searching for
teenage/young games testers. Could I have more information on this? I have sent an email previously but have yet to get replied. I assumed that my letter was too formal hence i sent the above.

Cheers,

Was "browsing" through my p2p program not too long ago if you'll believe me. You know how in those p2p programs like Kazaa and Emule/Edonkey where they have a chat function, you always get spammed by some fuckwits promoting another p2p program, or sex?

I've got it a lot. One day, I drank too much coffee and was feeling very UP and forgot that these "spammers" we're probably bots.

PutttttttFile Phuckers

PutFile bans SINGAPORE.
http://miyagi.sg/wp-trackback.php?p=227

Apparently, after that Viet-turned-Aussie Drug trafficker(God rest his soul) was hanged, these fucktards at PutFile.com decided they wanted to pretend to be big fucks and decided to ban the whole of Singapore from using their service. Besides the obvious discontent and pissed off faces, I just wanna say, Fuck 'em. Who need's 'em?

I think I've only used their service twice. Once when downloading a file, and the second time when uploading a file for a friend.

I find their service to be vastly "sucky" to the numerous other free file hosting services out there. Now I'm not just saying this because I'm bitter, in fact it's quite the opposite. I'm quite happy that such a restrictive and "sucky" service is being taken away from Singaporeans. This will greatly aid the 60% of my fellow countrymen(and women) who are incredibly naive when it comes to IT Technology.

So after the dust has settled and PutFile's dried shit has been shaken out of their hair, I'd like to thank them for helping us Singaporeans, to advance further along the IT Evolutionary scale.
